Shots and Sound Analysis- We are your friends

The trailer begins with a close-up of the main character, Zac Efron running through a small neighbourhood. The diegetic music playing is coming from the characters headphones but has been enhanced to make the music louder which is shown in the next shot. The diegetic music playing is a very upbeat, typical running track which links In with the idea of the character running.  The upbeat tempo sets the scene for the first shot as it makes the audience aware that this is going to be a very happy and positive film in comparison to films such as horror where generally the first scenes set the story to be a very negative and scary atmosphere. The next shot is another close-up of the main character with his headphones on and his facial expressions show the audience that he is concentrating on what he is doing. The background around him is blurred out to make the audience focus on the main character and what he is doing. This leaves the audience thinking why this is the opening shot and what relevance this is going to have to the rest of the film. The audience will then be intrigued to watch the rest of the film as they will want to find out the relevance behind the idea of music in the film.

A non-diegetic voice over is now added on top of the same music, but now the music is non-diegetic as the scene changes. Around 4 shots are shown, all 4 shots are low angles which conveys the power that these things have over a typical teenager’s life. One of the shots shows student loans which are known to be taking over a typical teenager’s life. These things are added in to show the audience that the characters that are going to be in the film are around or are the same age as the targeted audience. These things are also added so that the audience will be able to relate to the film such as the audience may be starting college and having to take out loans to be able to afford their education. The simple things of a teenagers lives are being added to the trailer so that people will be able to see these things, relate to them and want to watch the film to see how these things effect other teenagers lives so that they can seek advice, see how the characters take these things into their world and see how they develop or change because of college or being a teenager in general. Another low-angle is used when the 4 main characters are on screen with the title “This is not our future”. This tells the audience that these characters are challenging the typical lifestyle of a teenager and they want to do something different than staying in education. This makes the audience feel interested to know what other things people such as themselves are doing instead of education and to explore their options.

From this close-up shot, the non-diegetic music tempo increases and the music gets louder. The very upbeat non-diegetic music fits in with the voice over of “we promote parties” as parties include people dancing and music.  The voice-over is the voice of one of the main characters which shows the audience that he The main character is shown in a close-up shot and he says “I’m DJ-ing” which tells the audience that the main theme of the film is going to be revolving around music and parties which is a stereotypical representation of a typical college, teenager’s life. This makes the audience feel that they can relate to the characters in the film as they are around the same age, living a party life but education is still the main topic of the conversation.  The words “We promote parties” leaves the audience thinking how promoting parties will fit in with the idea of the storyline and makes the audience interested to watch the film to find out how this theme will turn out in the film.

The next shot is a close-up of a screen that has a non-diegetic voice over saying “all you need is a laptop and some talent”. The upbeat non-diegetic music is still playing in the background the same as the previous shots. These few shots telling the audience that they do not need to have a lot of practise or very high and expensive technology to become a DJ in the world as this character started with very simple, everyday things to make his career like it is in the film. This makes the audience be able to relate to the characters in the film as they may be wanting to start a career but do not have the funds so they are looking for a cheaper alternative to start which this film is going to show the audience how they can take little resources and make them work. This makes the audience interested into learning how the characters in the film used their own resources to become known in the film world.  The scene then changes and the non-diegetic music changes to a similar song but has been produced by the main character. The main character is creating music which shows the audience the passion and determination that they are going to see from the characters in the film. This makes the audience aware of a little thing that is going to happen in the film but does not give away the full story which leaves the audience with several questions about the storyline. The audience are now hooked to the storyline and they will want to watch the film to find out how the main characters make music and how this music has an impact on their college life to see how things plan out for them in the end.

What I have learned from trailers and how I will be applying that to my own work
From analysing these three trailers, I have learned that trailers play a very important part in letting the audience know about what the film is going to involve and it also plays an important part in hooking the audience into watching the film by showing interesting parts and leaving parts on cliff hangers so that the audience will want to watch the rest of the film. From watching these trailers, I will be using several of the things that I have learnt in creating my group and I’s horror trailer. The first thing that I will be using when creating my own trailer is the use of suspense to make the audience feel on edge and scared of what is going to happen next in the trailer. This keeps the audiences on edge and excited to know what is going to happen next. The next thing that I will using when creating my own trailer is using things that are going to be relatable to the targeted audience my group so that the audience will be able to relate to the things in the trailer and then want to watch the film. Lastly, I will be making sure that low-key lighting is used throughout the trailer as it shows the audience that the trailer is based on the genre horror.
